I have been both a “beneficiary” and an employee of the Salvation Army. They call you a “beneficiary” if you are one of the people working for them in a non-employee status in one of their programs doing warehouse work, etc.

I could say SO much here about the corruption, abuse of civil rights, discrimination, etc., etc., ad nauseum but the details would take up a whole book.

I will say that my long experience with them in several locations convinced me that they are basically leeches, crooks, liars, thieves and spineless parasites on the American Dream. Most of the money goes to their headquarters in England — yes, it leaves the USA…. at least that which the local “Officers” don’t put in their own pockets.

They pose as a church, hiding behind the bible to get tax-free status and then rip off everyone for their own gain. What they give back is MINISCULE compared to what they collect. Thieves, liars, bigots and hypocrites. That’s exactly what they are. They take advantage of the poor, the socially and mentally disadvantaged to get free labor to process and sell your donations. You probably think they GIVE away that stuff. Ha! No way, it goes in the stores or is baled and sold overseas to their great profit. Non-profit organization my ass!

Give to the Volunteers of America, Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, ANYBODY but the Salvation Army. They’re just phonies and leeches.

Here is yet another current employee being set up by the divisional headquarters in Ohio. The reason I am being targeted is because I have challenged these individuals with facts involving officers who had looted the corps I work at, they bled it dry for their own benefit. (New furniture, diamond rings, designer curtains, cruises, dinners out) The Salvation Army is corrupt and soon the piggy bank is going to be broken, possibly by a watchdog group or perhaps by the government itself. It is a sad day in hell when you have to report corruption at the salvation army. The people in charge have a code almost like a cult and they only employ family members who aren’t worth a damn to be in high paid positions, that they never show up for work. Any outsider that is hired does not last long for the army is threatened by anyone with any brains that can unlock the keys to their very sweet little kingdom. The officers live in very expensive homes, drive two even three brand new vehicles, have all free insurance, get their utilities paid for as well as their food, clothing, every expense imaginable. They want for nothing. They have no conception of what it is like to pay a house payment or to have to repair a car or purchase a vehicle or pay for their own food . They pay for no food, tv, internet, phone, nothing. They are paid for every child they have. This is a well guarded secret and if you challenge them they come after you with venom. The corruption is criminal and soon the army will be exposed for all that they have done. People are being threatened, lives are being affected by this corruption. Do not give to the army, if you do you are a damn fool.

I am a former Salvation Army officer. I resigned, my choice, but the situation I was placed in by SA administration was unbearable. The Salvation Army of today is not the same Salvation Army founded by William and Catherine Booth in 1865! The Salvation Army is a very political organization. There are many good officers out there fulfilling the mission, the hands on people work. Administration officers leave a lot to be desired - most enjoy a nice life with a Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm office schedule. I have no involvement anymore, that is my choice and it was a good one! A cult? I heard that mentioned in comments, I must agree! Their honor (the SA) is at stake and they will do anything and everything to preserve that image. Perhaps many remember the scandle from the late 1980's, early 1990's of SA officers who were pedophile's. The Salvation Army paid off millions in settlements! And then there are the officers who had affairs with underage girls, many of these officers were administrative officers and it was just brushed under the carpet. YES...there are many skeltons in the Salvation Army closet!

I am currently employed by The Salvation Army in the NE division. Sadly, after working for over a year I have witnessed some of the worst of what the army does not want YOU to know. They are a cult and if you are not a family member and just a regular employee you stand alone and will be eliminated after they have used you up and spit you out. Make no mistake; they are as corrupt as the day is long. The individuals (”Majors”-which is another joke) who run these corps in each county of each state are personally taken care of very well. A $250,000.00 house, two new cars, new expensive furniture, all their food and clothing and utilities paid for also, all insurance and gas. It is a joke. All those poor bastards putting money in these kettles thinking they are doing the right thing are privately being mocked by an institution that was once on the proper track and was respectable, it is now as corrupt as anything I have ever read about or witnessed. Be careful too, if they know you are exposing their secrets they will come after you with a vengeance. This organization does not share any information and is not as any other 501c3 is required to do and is not viewable on Guidestar, they only list the top commissioner’s salary in Washington, DC and what is listed is such a lie. His base salary may appear to be low, but what is unknown is that money is just for his own enjoyment, every and I repeat every expense possible is taken care of by YOU, the donor, by providing this corrupt organization with carte blanche to lie cheat and steal from the American public. This organization needs audited and will be soon, get ready boys, because your time is a comin’ to be exposed for all the treachery and lies.
The Salvation Army’s RED KETTLES you see in front of Walmart & other locations, are a 6 week (cult)church fundraising campaign (the church, aka cops community centers, are not self-sustaining) for a Salvationist church, that primarily caters to its Salvationist members, a lot of which are on the payroll. Would people still give knowing this? Wouldn’t they just give to their church... so they could expand its outreach programs?

Each local Salvation Army Corps (aka church) community center has a red kettle campaign (with a few exceptions.) The money raised will be used to fund that centers (church) budget for the year. A very large present of donations are not going to help the poor, but are paying operating cost...i.e. officers and staff salaries, building cost and maintenance (its intentional to have the centers (churches) look poverty stricken) cars and/or vans, gas, office supplies, church functions, uniforms, household furnishings- for the officers etc..

Most of the bell ringers are hired as seasonal help. They are very intentional in who they hire, appearance is everything (poverty profiling)… someone considered to be, or who looks to be- low class, poor or in need….
Thus stimulating your emotions; pimping your allegiance to the cause.

The Salvation Army does use some of the donated money to assist people. However, the percentage of money used is very small compared to the donations received.

Charity Navigator:  FAQ for Donors
Why don't you list the Salvation Army?
The Salvation Army is exempt under Internal Revenue Code from filing Form 990 as a "church or convention or association of churches." As a result, we lack sufficient data to evaluate their financial health.
We know many donors are interested in this organization and have asked the Salvation Army to submit their financial data to us for review, and they have elected to decline, as they are allowed under federal law.
